Never again fascism – Never again war

On the anniversary of the anti-fascist victory

Eighty years ago, the unconditional surrender of the Nazi Germany marked the emergence of humanity from the horrors of the war shouting: “never again fascism – never again war”.

Fascism, the “terrorist dictatorship of the most reactionary, chauvinistic and imperialist elements of the finance capital”, grew in power and aggression due to the outbreak of the general economic crisis of capitalism and the parallel rise of the international labor and communist movement.

WWII stemmed from the general crisis of the capitalist system, the desire of the aggressive Axis powers to dominate and redistribute the world, and the concerted effort by the entire capitalist world to crush the Soviet Union and the communist “threat”.

The big imperialist powers (England, France, USA) – the “good Western democracies” of the time – not only did nothing to stop the rise of Nazism, but encouraged, strengthened and used it as a strike force to stop the communist and revolutionary movement across the world. They followed a non-interventionist policy in the Spanish civil war, they refused to align with the Soviets against the Nazis, they followed a policy of apeasement while Hitler´s hordes were occupying Austria and Czechoslovakia, they declared the so-called “phoney war” while the Nazis invaded Poland. The US and England were forced to enter the war only when its outcome was more or less imminent and the defeat of the Axis predetermined. At the same time, the Chinese communists were fighting both against the Japanese and the Chinese nationalists.

The Nazis were crushed and the fascist monster was buried thanks to the countless sacrifices, self-denial and heroism of millions of Soviet soldiers and citizens, and to the contribution of the resistance movements in the occupied countries, among which the Greek one under the guidance of the Communist Party  holds an honorary position.

Yet, contemporary “good western democracies” are attempting to rewrite history and erase historical memory, proclaiming the collaborators of the Nazis as “heroes” and at the same time destroying anything reminiscent of the anti-fascist victory, the Red Army or the Soviet Union. Of course it does not come as a surprise that they prohibit the presence of western delegations to the anniversary events in Moscow.

Today’s “good western democracies” compete in warmongering in Ukraine, watch indifferently the holocaust in Gaza and support the fascist state of Israel.

Eighty years after the end of the most barbaric, destructive and merciless war, the peoples of the world are facing fascism and war again. Commonly accepted democratic freedoms and rights, international rules and law are being eroded. Humanitarian law and democracy are being violated. Fascist and far-right political organizations and parties rise in prominence and in many cases hold governmental power. Xenophobia and racism against anything different are being systematically cultivated. The importance of “power” vs the helplessness of “weakness” are being systematically projected. Mass media propaganda has nothing to envy Goebbels. Education and “culture” serve the fascistization of public life and the cultivation of fascist ideas among the youth and the popular masses. Movements and collectivities, nations and countries, anything progressive that challenges the ruling order is being demonized. Political governance is dominated by authoritarian modes of decision making. The imperialists cynically force their will everywhere.

War is no longer a distant possibility. As imperialist interests become more threatened and American hegemony faces challenges, imperialism grows increasingly aggressive, heightening the risk of conflicts escalating into full-scale wars. Regional conflicts and imperialist interventions barely mentioned in the western media are unfolding in Asia and Africa. In Ukraine, the entire West has been fighting against Russia for more than two and a half years now. In a small strip of land, in Gaza, all horrors of the WWII are unfolding. A powerful fascist state is attempting to destroy a population that resists and stands above the ruins of its homeland, without supplies, doctors and medicine, food and water. The images of the flattened Gaza, the corpses and the skeletal children are tragically similar to the images of the concentration camps, the destroyed and burned down towns and villages, the devastated women and children, the starving skeletal people left behind by the Nazis. The “civilized” and “democratic” West is simply watching, supporting the butcher Netanyahu just like they supported Hitler. The West keeps addressing the planned occupation of Gaza and the displacement of its population as if it were something “normal”. It keeps ignoring statements like the ones proclaiming that”hell will be brought to Gaza”.

Stalin once said, “To abolish the inevitability of wars we must annihilate imperialism”. The only thing that can prevent war and defend peace is the development of a broad, international, anti-imperialist movement that will embrace all peoples. Those who desire peace should contribute to the development of such a movement. That said, our main duty in Greece is to fight against the dangerous government of Mitsotakis that always rushes to follow its NATO bosses and willingly serves their plans, even against peace and the future of the people and the country.

Fascism in 20th century was crushed by the communist movement. Today, it raises again in prominence, precisely because the communist movement that could oppose fascism is absent. The rebirth of the communist movement is crucial and it is the duty of those who draw conclusions and lessons on the occasion of the anniversary of the anti-fascist victory.
